The termite colony is a well organized army in which every member has its role: The king’s function is to reproduce, the queen lays eggs, the soldiers defend the colony, the workers build the nest and forge for the colony’s food, the swarmers leave the nest to establish new colonies.
All of the Subterranean termites are generally creamy white in color, almost translucent, being the size af a grain of rice. The reproductives(swarmers), have a pair of even-sized wings and are many times mistaken for ants. The workers look similar to the reproductives, only they are a little smaller and do not have wings. The soldiers are also similar except for their oversized heads and large mandibles used in defense of the colony.

Control of Wood Destroying Organisms Other Than Eastern Subterranean Termites
Eastern Subterranean Termites are the primary Termite species in North Carolina, Raleigh area. But there are others species and insects that infest wood.
Formosan Termites: A Very aggressive invasive species
Dry wood Termites: Can be brought in via imported furniture from Dry environments.
Wet/Damp Wood Termites: Usually in coastal or swampy environments
Old House Borers:
Long Horn beetle whose larvel stage can be present in wood for years causing significant damage over time. Sometimes the wood is infested during the construction phase of the home. If materials have been stored outside for long periods of time. These can require specialized treatments to eliminate.
Powder Post Beetles:
Anobiidae and Lyctidae are two of the most common types in North Carolina. The larve of these beetles if left unchecked overtime will turn wood into powder.
Anobiidae usually infest softer woods such as pine, fir etc.
Lyctidae like hard woods such as Oak and Hickory
Wood Decay Fungi:
If there are elevated moisture levels in Crawl Areas, Attics, Storage Units, Sheds etc, the conditions can present themselves where wood decay fungus can occur, commonly known as dry rot. The fungus consumes the sugars present in the wood, breaking it down and turning it into a powder when its dried.

Wood Destroying Insect Report (WDIR-100)
When buying or refinancing your home, a WDIR-100 may be required. Even if not required, it is in your best interest to obtain this report. This report is an inspection of the home for past, present or on-going wood destroying insect issues.
